4 Days 3 Nights Camel Trek To Erg Zahar

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1. Day 1 — Toward Sidi Naji

   After breakfast we load the camel caravan, put on our turbans and set off for the Sahara, walking about five hours through varied landscapes — palm groves on one side, the dunes of the Draa Valley on the other — on a south-westerly course toward the marabout (shrine) of Sidi Naji, where camp is pitched among small dunes.

2. Day 2 — Erg Zahar

   After breakfast we strike camp and walk around four hours, mostly across flat, plateau-like ground (a dried lake bed), toward the vast, remote dunes of Zahar, reached before lunch. Camp is made at the foot of the tall dunes; the afternoon is free to explore the erg — known locally as the "screaming dunes" for the legend of a village buried beneath the sand — and to watch the sunset from its highest point.

3. Day 3 — Return

   The morning is spent trekking the dunes of Erg Zahar, then we return to camp by 4x4.
