Fes (also spelled Fez, Arabic: فاس, Berber: ⴼⴰⵙ) is Morocco’s oldest imperial city and widely regarded as the country’s spiritual and cultural heart. Known for its ancient medina, traditional crafts, and prestigious Islamic heritage, Fes offers an authentic glimpse into medieval Moroccan life and is home to the world’s oldest university.
Antecedentes históricos
- Founded in 789 CE by Idris I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty.
- Became a major Islamic and cultural center during the 9th and 10th centuries.
- Hosted Arab refugees from Andalusia and Tunisia, influencing architecture and cuisine.
- Served as the capital under several Moroccan dynasties including the Marinids, Almoravids, and Alaouites.
- The University of Al Quaraouiyine, established in 859 CE, is considered the oldest continuously operating university in the world.
Fes’s rich history is visible in its medieval architecture, madrasas, palaces, and sacred sites.
