DESTINATIONS

The city of Ouarzazate is a town in southern Morocco and the capital of the province of the same name. It is nicknamed “the gate of the desert”.

Located at the meeting point of the Ouarzazate and Wadi Dades valleys (from the Upper Atlas) which form the Oued Drâa downstream of their confluence, it is the nerve center of a vast region of the South Moroccan. Ouarzazate evokes both the southern foothills of the High Atlas and the proximity of the desert.

Its innumerable adobe kasbahs, mountains and arid plains, green valleys and oases, palm groves and villages of red or ocher earth make the charm of this region and give it its tourist attraction.

The symbol of the city is the kasbah Taourirt (opposite) that belonged to the Glaoui, it was built around the middle of the eighteenth century. It is represented in the new 50 dirham tickets and is adjacent to the medina. The agglomeration of Grand Ouarzazate extends on the south side of the wadi by the village of Tabount – sometimes called “Ouarzazate-South” – which is part, like the kasbah of Tifoultoute.
